On April 24, 2018, Sherry Brown, Esquire presented a training session at the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Officials (“PSATS”) Spring 2018 Educational Conference titled: The Wiretap Act, Police Body Cams, and the Right-to-Know Law. The session focused on Act 22 of 2017, which amended the Pennsylvania Wiretap Law to open the door for law enforcement officers to capture audio and/or video recordings, removing barriers that once stood in the way of body camera use; requirements for a written policy; and exemption from the dissemination of such audio and/or video recordings from the Right to Know Law. Participants were advised of policy provisions for the use of body worn cameras and the steps they must take to respond to requests for law enforcement audio and video recordings.
Should you have any questions regarding Act 22, policy requirements or the new procedures for dissemination of audio/video recordings, contact Sherry at slbrown@sianalaw.com or 610-321-550 ext. 117.
