They presented a variety of seminars that covered topics pertinent to municipal officials and employees, such as social media and the First Amendment. Read the descriptions below, which were featured in the conference program, to learn more about each session.
“First Amendment: Township Parks, Special Events and Social Media” by Michael G. Crotty, Esquire and Eric M. Brown, Esquire
This session is designed to give township officials a basic understanding of the First Amendment and its impact on regulations for local parks and special events. Mr. Crotty and Mr. Brown will also discuss the First Amendment and social media and recommend strategies for reacting to third-party posts and addressing inappropriate social media usage by employees.
“Best Practices in Police Management” by Sheryl L. Brown, Esquire
Attend this session to discuss police liability, how to lower your township’s risk of litigation, and how to evaluate the management of your police department. The presenter, a police civil rights attorney, will also focus on the critical roles of elected officials, managers, police chiefs, and attorneys.
“Social Media for Supervisors” by Sheryl L. Brown, Esquire
This panel that will address questions on the best practices to employ when using social media as an elected official.
“Township Officials, Theft, Bribery, Ethics and the Courts” by Michael G. Crotty, Esquire
News stories about public employees who steal from their communities, operate pay-to-play schemes, and are involved in ethics violations are good reminders that every township needs to take active steps to prevent similar abuses. During this workshop, participants will explore several recent cases, including that of a long-time municipal administrative assistant who has been charged with stealing more than $260,000. Criminal prosecutions in Allentown and Reading will also be discussed.
