On January 16, 2019, Eric M. Brown and Michael G. Crotty of Siana Law, presented a webinar on Ethics and Zoning to more than 45 participants from across the Commonwealth as part of the Penn State Extension Spring 2019 Land Use series. Participants received AICP maintenance credits for attending.
The webinar series assists municipal elected and appointed officials, planners, land owners, farmers and community organizations in being informed as to land use issues and decisions in their communities. Eric and Michael’s webinar explored three common claims raised during zoning and land development proceedings: conflicts of interest; bias; and bad faith. They provided an overview of the zoning and land development process; and discussed the roles of the governing body, township engineer, zoning officer and zoning hearing board in the process. They offered practical guidance on how to avoid claims of conflicts of interest, bias and bad faith, and offered an update on recent legal decisions that impact zoning and land development decisions.
